Small intervention with banner and flyers at this year’s Amazon Web Service (AWS) Summit in Berlin: Our greetings go to all the great people in New York City, who managed to kick amazon out of the city. We will follow suit!
At the invitation of amazon and numerous sponsors, thousands of customers* of Amazon Web Services, the cloud computing division of the globally active company, will meet at the AWS Summit in Berlin Station. We took the opportunity to introduce the visitors to amazon’s anti-social and anti-union practices.

Berlin is the next New York… Fuck off amazon!
For the success of online companies it is crucial to be omnipresent. Only those who are considered mega-relevant will reach the top of the Internet world, which is striving for monopolies. But they seem to avoid controversial discussions. And so the online retailer amazon announced after protests by residents in New York that it was abandoning plans for a new headquarters planned there. Instead of seriously addressing the criticism of the promised tax gifts and the question of a socially acceptable choice of location, the companies such as amazon prefer to go where such debates are not even conducted.
The planned settlement in Long Island City in the Queens district was the result of a large-scale search for a “second headquarters” as a supplement to the previous company headquarters in Seattle, in which amazon allowed various cities to compete against each other. The agreement for the new amazon headquarters in New York City was reached in secret negotiations with Governor Andrew Cuomo and the Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio.
After the announcement of the deal, community activists and local politicians had held hearings and criticized in particular the planned massive subsidies to amazon. A further reason for their resistance was the concern that thousands of very well paid tech workers would let the rents in the area skyrocket. They also feared that only a fraction of the promised thousands of tech jobs would go to people in the neighborhood.
Queens defeated amazon and the richest man in the world, Jeff Bezos. But we’re not done yet. amazon would have destroyed NY and hit the weakest, and the current status quo is not good enough worldwide.
For many years amazon employees have been fighting for improvements in their working conditions, in Germany it’s all about a collective agreement. The outcome of these disputes is still completely uncertain. This is because it is not primarily a wage conflict. amazon refuses in principle to negotiate with trade unions or even conclude collective agreements.
The fights for workers’ rights at amazon are a matter for all of us! Together with Google, Facebook, Apple and Microsoft, amazon is one of the “Big Five” that dominate the Internet today. But perhaps even more than the others, the Seattle-based company is trying to redefine working conditions in digital capitalism. We would like to have a say in the transformation of our world!

Beim AWS-Summit treffen sich auf Einladung von amazon und zahlreichen Sponsoren in der Location Berlin Station tausende Kund*innen von Amazon Web Services, der erfolgreichen Cloud-computing Sparte des global agierenden Unternehmens. Wir nutzten die Chance um die Besucher*innen der Messe auf die antisoziale und gewerkschaftsfeindliche Praxis von amazon Aufmerksam zu machen.

Berlin is the next New York… Fuck off amazon!
Für den Erfolg von Onlinefirmen ist es zentral, omnipräsent zu sein. Nur wer als mega-relevant gilt, kommt in der nach Monopolen strebenden Internetwelt an die Spitze. Kontroverse Diskussionen scheint man aber zu scheuen. Und so hat der Onlinehändler amazon nach Protesten von Anwohnern in New York angekündigt, die Pläne für ein dort geplantes neues Hauptquartier aufzugeben. Statt sich mit der Kritik an den versprochenen Steuergeschenken und der Frage einer sozialverträglichen Standortwahl ernsthaft auseinanderzusetzen, geht man lieber dahin, wo solche Debatten erst gar nicht geführt werden.
Die geplante Ansiedlung in Long Island City im Stadtteil Queens war Ergebnis einer groß angelegten Suche nach einem »zweiten Hauptquartier« als Ergänzung zum bisherigen Firmensitz in Seattle bei der amazon verschiedene Städte regelrecht gegeneinander konkurieren ließ. Die Vereinbarung zum neuen amazon-Hauptquartier in New York City war in Geheimverhandlungen mit Gouverneur Andrew Cuomo und dem Bürgermeister von New York City Bill de Blasio zustande gekommen.
Nach Bekanntgabe des Deals hatten Gemeindeaktivist*innen und Lokalpolitiker*innen Anhörungen abgehalten und dabei besonders die geplanten massiven Subventionen an amazon kritisiert. Ein weiterer Grund für ihren Widerstand war die Sorge, dass tausende sehr gut bezahlte Tech-Arbeitnehmer die Mieten in der Gegend in die Höhe schnellen lassen würden. Sie befürchteten das zudem nur ein Bruchteil der versprochenen tausenden Tech-Jobs an Menschen aus der Nachbarschaft gehen würden.
Queens besiegte amazon und den reichsten Mann der Welt, Jeff Bezos. Aber wir sind noch nicht fertig. amazon hätte NY zerstört und die Schwächsten getroffen, und der aktuelle Status quo ist weltweit nicht gut genug.
Seit vielen Jahren kämpfen amazon-Beschäftigte für Verbesserungen ihrer Arbeitsbedingungen, in Deutschland geht es konkret um einen Tarifvertrag. Dabei ist der Ausgang der Auseinandersetzungen nach wie vor völlig ungewiss. Das liegt daran, dass es sich in erster Linie nicht um einen Lohnkonflikt handelt. amazon weigert sich prinzipiell, mit Gewerkschaften zu verhandeln oder gar Tarifverträge abzuschließen.
Dabei gehen die Kämpfe um Arbeitnehmerrechte bei amazon uns alle an! Gemeinsam mit Google, Facebook, Apple und Microsoft gehört amazon zu den „Big Five“, die heute das Internet beherrschen. Aber vielleicht mehr noch als die anderen versucht das Unternehmen aus Seattle, die Arbeitsbedingungen im digitalen Kapitalismus neu zu definieren. Bei der Umgestaltung unserer Welt möchten wir ein Wörtchen mitreden!
